Why does purpose matter

Hello everyone,
I hope you had a fruitful week and looking forward to an extended weekend. Today I am going to be sharing on having a purpose and why it matters.

In the last couple of years,  I have been privileged to share with lots of young people asking if they were in the right place or not knowing what choice to make when faced with different options. The range of choices included career choices,  partner choices. What was evident in a large number of cases was that choices made were largely driven by immediate circumstances or environment of the individual. Lots of people are making Major decisions driven by circumstances rather than an outcome desired based on a life purpose.

So what really is purpose?  Simply put,"  it's the reason why something exists". Why is this important?  One of the fundamental principles in life is simply the fact that life is about choices. Whatever we are or become are a cumulative of different choices we have made in the past or have been made on our behalf. Understanding why we exist provides an anchor in life and very strong gauge to assess our options before making major life decisions. Sadly as we grow up,  we find out that life doesn't leave us with easy choices especially if you are in a leadership position. Frederick Forsyth puts this clearly in his book the devil's alternative. In one of the scenes in the book where the president had a difficult decision to make,  He said "either way,  men will die,  that's the devil's alternative ".

Purpose also starts to drive value in our lives because it makes our situation or circumstances irrelevant.  We become victors rather than victims no matter our station in life.  Purpose gives meaning to life rather than just striving for survival.

Looking back at my own past, i could see how clarity of purpose helped me make choices which turned out good. Before you start wondering if I had always been clear about what I lived for,  I only became sure about my purpose around 2008. Before then my choices were driven by my experiences growing up with a military father and a mother with strong foundations in the church.  Ever since I became clear about my purpose,  life became simpler(not easier),  and I have become more comfortable with the choices I make because I make them with the right purpose in mind.
What is behind the major decisions you are making in life? Do you know why you exist?

The next question I guess most people will be asking is how do I find my purpose?  How do I know if it is the right one.
Next week I will share on how I found my purpose  and the impact it has had on me.
Have a great week and God bless us all.
Regards,
